Sustainable living

Our ultimate goal is to minimize our and your impact on the environment. We are reducing our footprint by composting toilet and kitchen waste, being mindful of our water usage, recycling the water we do use via our grey-water system, and maximizing the use of local and natural materials in our buildings.

The main rancho

The open sided, palm roofed Main Rancho is the center of Esperanza life. Spacious and airy, it has a large hammock lounge, communal dining area and plenty of space for doing your own thing. If you can tear yourself away from the beach we have a library with a great selection of hundreds of books, in both Spanish and English, as well as board games, puzzles, guitar, and drum.

Inside a low impact cabaña.

Sleeping

You have the choice of two dormitories each sleeping six, seven private bamboo cabañas sleeping up to four, a hammock area, and spacious grounds providing shaded camp sites.

You'll get a great night sleep on our thick comfortable mattresses in our bamboo cabañas that let the sea breeze in! Two of our cabañas have private 1/2 baths.

We accept cash only; córdobas and crisp dollar bills ($50 bills or smaller). There are no ATMs or banks in Jiquilillo. The nearest ATM is in Chinandega. We also accept surf boards and equipment (leashes, fins etc) as payment via our Surf Camp & Club.

Eating

Complementing our sustainable living and community ideals we use local produce, our fresh fish from the Jiquilillo fishermen, milk and cheese from our neighbor's farm, our eggs from the Egg Lady in Padre Ramos, in-season fruits from local families, and our vegetables are from Chinandega's open-air municipal market.

A fresh Rancho Esperanza breakfast.

We serve three meals a day for our guests and volunteers, specializing in vegetarian, Asian and Nicaraguan cuisine, and a homemade spaghetti sauce using fresh herbs from the garden.

Breakfast is served from 7am to 10:30am and choices include a large fruit plate, yogurt and granola, and eggs. Free tea and great ecological coffee are served during breakfast hours.

Lunches and dinners are served family style at our large dining table with a vegetarian option always available. Dinner is the main meal of the day here and we keep it healthy and hearty with lots of vegetables and homemade sauces.

We offer a snack menu and local venders passing through sell fresh mangos, coconut bread, pasteles (little pastries), and, if we're lucky, the occasional ice cream.

Sports equipment, boogie boards, skim boards and bike rental are all free. We rent out our surf boards cheaply at $10 for the day. We rent the surf boards and provide surf lessons via our Surf Camp & Club.

Internet

The internet has arrived in Jiquilillo! We charge $2 the hour.

Spanish lessons

We offer Spanish lessons with Azael Pinea, a Rancho Esperanza employee who has been successful in raising literacy rates within his community of Padre Ramos, for $5 per hour per person. Maximum of four students.
